I am sure there are as many printers as answers here.

I use an HP 8610 printer. In your price range, economical printing, large black cartridge for long cartridge life, colour when you need, double sided printing, scanning to PDF and economical copying for small copy runs.

I use it to print EE material, PDF pay slips, voucher cheques and general printing. I run my own business on it.

Yes - the 8610 you show is the one I use. I purchased it at Staples so the precise model may differ a bit.

I'd go for a cheap laser printer. Mono printers are available for very cheap, and even those that prin in color are very cheap. Really any manufacturer and model will do. The advantage of laser printers is that ink can't dry out when you don't print regularly, it doesn't have to flush the cartridges, wasting ink all the time, and toner cartridges usually last much longer than ink cartridges.

I would look in PC shops close to you, they often have very cheap special offers, often for around $50.-- +/-. Besides, you can just walk out of the shop with it, you don't have to additionally pay for postage.

I understand the point above and if you are looking for very cheap, then consider rindi's advice.

The HP 8610 competes with laser printers on a cents per page basis. The cartridges are well designed and it does not use a lot of ink maintaining itself.

If you are looking at Total Cost Of Ownership (TCO) over the life of the printer, then really pay attention to the cost of inks rather than the upfront cost of the printer. In your price range, the HP models are actually the best ones. Low upfront cost for many features, with low-cost ink (comparatively), resulting in a low TCO. Also, make sure you get a network capable printer rather than a USB connected one.

For a color printer, you want to buy the printer with options for individual color and BW ink cartridges rather than a printer that only has a black and/or a multi-color cartridge. In this case, running out of Cyan won;t force you to purchase a cartridge that also has Magenta you do not need.

Good buys:
HP OfficeJet All-in-Ones, or LaserJet
Xerox (laser - not solid ink)

Stay away from: (The TCO is outright expensive)
Lexmark
Brother
Fujitsu
Sharp
Toshiba

HP has the lowest TCO vs, quality. Xerox is next for quality (the best quality) vs. cost. The rest are absolute garbage pieces of hardware that are cheap up front but hit you hard on the inks. Remember, a $20 ink cartridge for a Brother will not get you as many prints as a $20 HP cartridge, or nearly the quality.

My HP 8610 prints Black at under 1 cent per page plus paper cost. Nice and economical.
