Images Within a Wordpress Blog Roll

Just restyled a Wordpress site to create a BlogRoll Page, I am using Ultimate Blog Roll Plugin. I was wondering if there is any way to get Images next to the BlogRoll Link Text?

http://dtauto.ca/blog/

I have Googled, "thumbnails for blogroll in wordpress" and have already tried 3 Plugins and still no luck.... there must be a way to do this?

thanks.

The easiest way to do this is to alter the code for that Loop so it pulls in the featured image using the_post_thumbnail()

Is this a page of posts or is /blog/ a category?

answer: page of posts

So that page should have a matching page template in Appearance | Editor.  If so, post the source code and I can show you what to modify.

Do I need the Featured Image Plugin? installed?

Plugins for this don't always work well because it depends on exactly how the theme is constructed.  You can try it, and if it works for your current theme, great.  I always prefer to edit the PHP to add the functionality myself, though.

Hi Fadercreep,
a blogroll is not a page of post but a list of links that usually appear in a sidebar. If this is the plugin you are using, it hasn't been updated in over 2 years. I'd trash it. And it's for enabling link trades with other blogs, anyway.

It's very important to keep the terminology correct or else we may send you off on a wild goose chase! ;)

If you are interested in the Featured Image for your list of posts on the blog homepage, then Jason is herding you in the right direction.

This is a good question as far as what theme page to edit. I believe it would be the page.php file because the Blog Links Page was just set up under a normal page creation and then Ultimate Blog Roll was the plugin I used to create all of the links:

Here is the code for that page:

Page Template:
(page.php)

<?php get_header();?>
<div id="content">
	<div class="wrapper">
    	<div class="content-left height">
			<?php if (have_posts()) : while (have_posts()) : the_post(); ?>

                <?php the_content(); ?>

            <?php endwhile; else: ?>

                <div class="error"><?php _e('Not found.'); ?></div>

            <?php endif; ?>
        </div>
        <div class="content-right height">
        	<?php get_sidebar(); ?>
        </div>
        <div class="clear"></div>
    </div>
</div><!-- EOF : content ID -->
<?php get_footer(); ?>

Opps I was wrong, I was able to find the Loop that they were talking about in the Codex from Wordpress and found it in

Main Index Template (index.php)

<?php get_header(); ?>
<div id="content">
	<div class="wrapper">
    	<div class="content-left height">
<?php if (have_posts()) :	while (have_posts()) : the_post(); ?>

<div class="story">
				<div class="story_title"><h3><a href="<?php the_permalink(); ?>" rel="bookmark"><?php the_title(); ?></a></h3></div>

<?php if ( has_post_thumbnail() ) : ?>
	<a href="<?php the_permalink(); ?>" title="<?php the_title_attribute(); ?>">
	<?php the_post_thumbnail(); ?>
	</a>
<?php endif; ?>

				<div class="lt_date">Posted on  <?php the_time('F j, Y'); ?></div>
				<div class="storyContent">

					<?php the_excerpt(''); ?>
					<div style="clear:both;"></div>
				</div>
                <div class="tags">
                     <span><a href="<?php the_permalink(); ?>" rel="bookmark">Read More...</a></span>
                </div>
			</div><!-- close story -->
<?php endwhile; ?>

<div class="navigation">
	<div class="alignleft"><?php next_posts_link('&laquo; Older Entries') ?></div>
	<div class="alignright"><?php previous_posts_link('Newer Entries &raquo;') ?></div>
	<div class="clear"></div>
</div>

<?php else: ?>

<h2 class="error"><?php _e('Not Found.'); ?></h2>
<p class="error">Sorry, but you are looking for something that isn't here.</p>

<?php endif; ?>

  </div>
        <div class="content-right height">
        	<?php get_sidebar(); ?>
        </div>
        <div class="clear"></div>
    </div>
</div><!-- EOF : content ID -->
<?php get_footer(); ?>

which produced what I wanted, I also added the call to the functions.php file and you can see the result of the edits live on the blog:

Next question how do we style the image to get word warp around the pitcure.... ie. Pic on left words on right.

I found this code in the "View Page Source" and wanted to style the thumbnail images for the blog posts. So Here is the code:

<a href="http://dtauto.ca/lawn-mower-batteries/" title="Lawn Mower Batteries">
	<img width="222" height="222" src="http://dtauto.ca/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/Lawn-Mower-Battery-thumb.png" class="attachment-post-thumbnail wp-post-image" alt="carquest Lawnmower batteries" />	</a>

Open in new window

However I can not find the CSS Class = "attachment-post-thumbnail wp-post-image" within my Stylesheet (styles.css)

Should I just make a new class and style to taste?

I think the class should look like this:
img.attachment-post-thumbnail.wp-post-image

I have a few questions because I'm still confused by what you are doing and I'm not sure you are taking proper precautions to save the edits you are making.

1. Did you make a child theme of the theme you are using? If not, when you update the theme, all your work will disappear.
2. Please clarify are you trying to create a LIST Of YOUR OWN post on one page like an archive?

Because if that is the case you should be editing a file called index.php or home.php (If it's there). There is the off chance that your theme is using a blog template and then that would be in page-blog.php (or something closely named) It get's turned on in the WordPress admin for a page you create to show your blog posts.

 Thanks for your help, you seem like an amazing expert aat the wordpress stuff. I am doing number #2, I Have created my own list of blog posts on a normal wordpress page. I have assigned the page using the reading settings in wordpress as well as setting it in a plugin called ultimate blog roll.

 For the most part I have edited all of the proper pages within the wp editor and don't think I will loose any information because it is now hard coded into the tempate's theme.

 At this point all Im really looking for is some minor CSS advice to get the post content to the right of the blog thumbnail image.

 If you think there is a major concern of loosing data please tell me what I am missing.

This is not how it's done fadercreep.

Thanks for your help, you seem like an amazing expert aat the wordpress stuff.

I'm a custom themer. I build themes from scratch using Underscores starter theme. So yes, I do know a thing or two.

I Have created my own list of blog posts on a normal wordpress page. I have assigned the page using the reading settings in wordpress as well as setting it in a plugin called ultimate blog roll.

As, I said above, a blogroll is not your list of post, but a list of third party blogs you wish to show on your site. Not sure what that plugin is doing for you.

The proper way to do this without losing your changes:

1. CREATE A CHILD theme if you wish to edit your template files. Or, with certainty, your changes will be overwritten when you update the theme. You simply copy the files you want to edit into the child theme. Edit them there and they will trump the parent theme code and remain safe from getting overwritten.

Listen,
Can you please start a new thread and include the content from your last post on this thread.
In that new question include:

1. A link to the site you are working on or at the very least a link to the theme you are using
2. A screen grab of the template file structure

You are hacking your theme right now. Not good. You don't need a plugin. What you are trying to do is easily done in the admin and editing the proper template files, with a little knowledge of child themes and template hierarchy.

No worries, Jason.
You answered the question perfectly! fadercreep was looking to add an image to a blog excerpt. And your solution worked.

The issue with termonology, templates and child theme is a whole nuther bundle of wax which I feel is best served by new question.

Thank you for your offer. That is very gracious of you!
