Files say Read-Only Server 2012

hey guys,

we have Server 2012 std here with some basic file shares. There's about 10 users using windows 7 access the files.

Now when users open some files, it say's that it's already open and they need to open a read-only copy even when no one else has it open. What could be causing this?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

The most common culprit is antivirus software not designed to servers. Since client OSes don't have multiple users, an AV can get away with holding locks on behalf of a user. But on a multiuser server, thus wreaks havoc. There are utilities that can let you view open file handles. I believe sysinternals even has one.
