"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I am not familiar with that program, but if it uses standard Windows-style menus, wouldn't clicking on File > Print enable you to change the printer?

If that's not how it's done in JS - FACT accounting software, I would contact their technical support  for assistance.

Hi! Alicia, it was not as easy as you said.

Me, my part-time colleague and my boss spent two to three days to go through the Help file and the software to find all the default printer settings and there was none.

You might need to expand the categories of this question to find the help you need, then.

I'll look for the solution and I'll post here if I find something, but my previous search yielded no results, so I'm not optimistic.

HTML5 and CSS3 Fundamentals

Build a website from the ground up by first learning the fundamentals of HTML5 and CSS3, the two popular programming languages used to present content online. HTML deals with fonts, colors, graphics, and hyperlinks, while CSS describes how HTML elements are to be displayed.

Hi Kevin,

I've been following this thread and would love to help you, as I am interested in all things Document Management and Document Imaging. So I searched for info about JS FACT Accounting and could find very little. Here's a link supposedly with a download but there's no way I would risk it:
http://jsfiddle.net/a8RHQ/

If it took three people 2-3 days to go through the Help file and the software in order to find the default printer settings, only to come up empty, I would strongly advise moving to a modern, supported accounting package. What's going to happen when something more serious occurs (e.g., accounting related), if it's that difficult to find the default printer settings? Also, Alicia is spot-on about File>Print (sometimes Print Preview or Print Setup) — every Windows program should have it, unless printing makes no sense for the program, but it certainly does for an accounting package. It's hard to understand how accounting software that runs in Windows wouldn't have File>Print.

I know this isn't what you wanted to hear, but my advice is to get out from under JS FACT, unless there's something about the package that is unique to your business and can't be replicated in modern, commercially available Windows software. Regards, Joe

Some old software would just print automatically to whichever printer is the default printer in Windows.

Am I right to assume that the problem here is that the user's default printer has been changed in Windows & the FACT software is not picking up on that change?  If that's the case, is it possible to call or email their tech support?

Hi! Joe,

The link you are referring to is not correct.

Hi! Alicia,

Thanks for the suggestion but my client has decided not to renew their support with the FACT company and so I am really on my own to resolve it.

The issue you stated is the correct one which the users are currently facing.

What is the correct link for the JS FACT that you're using?

This is the company that developed FACT.

Is it an up-to-date version of FACT ERP.NG that you're using? If not, is updating to the latest FACT ERP.NG a possibility? It seems to be a modern program and would almost surely support what your user wants to do. Regards, Joe

It is not updated as the company does not want to spend this kind of money as the software is working fine. I think it is a dead end.

Can other users print to a different printer in FACT or is the problem isolated to a single user?  If another user logs on to the same PC as the user having the problem and sets the same printer as their default, can they print to that printer from FACT? (I would change the default printer before they ever launch FACT)

If the printer setting is saved the user's profile, there could be a registry entry or an INI or CFG file somewhere that sets it. So, if you could find that file or registry value, then maybe you could copy that to the user in question to change her printer.

Working software is only part of the battle. Support for software is another extremely important element. A company needs financial software with decent support, which strikes me as one of the costs of doing business. But if they don't see it that way, c'est la vie.

OK, let's go back to your initial post, where you said that the user wants to print the documents onto another printer. So, a few questions for you:

(1) What is the name of the printer that it prints on now?

(2) What is the name of the default printer?

(3) What is the version of Windows?

(4) How is FACT being launched? If it's via a shortcut, what are the Properties of that shortcut? Perhaps the shortcut contains a printer-name option.

(5) Does it have a settings/config file? If so, is it plain text? If so, have you looked at it for a printer-name option? The point is, if FACT is not printing to the Windows default printer, then something in either the launch string or a settings/config/options file or the registry is telling it to print elsewhere.

The printer now is a dot matrix printer

Epson LQ-2090

Windows Xp & 7

via a shortcut on the desktop, it does contain any printer-name option

What kind of properties do you need to know?

There are no setting / configuration files

You can only choose laser or dot matrix printer when you first logged in. After that you cannot choose which printer to print from.

I presume you meant to say, "it does not contain any printer-name option" — right?

> What kind of properties do you need to know?

The Target field. It may show a printer name option in the call.

> You can only choose laser or dot matrix printer when you first logged in.

Why is that not sufficient for your user?

Anonymous KHIT EngineerAuthor Commented:
You are right on the "not"

The target field is the same for all the users.

The user chooses laser, but when the user prints out the document, there is no option to choose which printer to print from. The only button available is print.

OK, but what is the Target field? Please copy/paste it into a post. For example, here's the Target field from the Properties of the Notepad shortcut on a W7 computer:

%windir%\system32\notepad.exe

Likewise, here's the Target field from the Properties of a third-party product:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Nuance\PaperPort\PaprPort.exe"

What is the Target field from the Properties of the JS FACT shortcut?

Kevin,
OK, there's no printer specified on that Target field, which is what I was looking for. Based on nearly two months of elapsed time in trying to find a solution, it seems that this old version of the software has no way to change the printer setting. You said earlier that the software "is not updated as the company does not want to spend this kind of money as the software is working fine." Of course, the software is not completely working fine, as software that is working fine would allow you to print to any printer defined in Windows. But if the company doesn't want to spend the money on an up-to-date version of FACT ERP.NG (or some other modern accounting software), then the answer to your question of "where do I go to change that setting" seems to be "you can't". As an EE support article says, this is never what an asker wants to hear, but it is sometimes the unfortunate truth. Regards, Joe
