you have to change the boot priority then in the bios  as shown here :  https://askleo.com/how_do_i_boot_from_cddvdusb_in_windows_8/

what pc model is it?

laptop brand is sony , I install a google chrome udpate and regboot, it then fail. this laptop has been using almost 3 years ! no problem at all.

buy my home PC, in luck that do not have the same problem. this make me think this is hardawre problem.

""you have to change the boot priority then in the bios  as shown here :  https://askleo.com/how_do_i_boot_from_cddvdusb_in_windows_8/"

what you mean is I boot from DVD that has windows 8.1 x 64 image and the do the rest as what the second part of this link about :

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/26095-repair-install-windows-8-a.html

this link said that method only use if  I can login to the Windows desktop, but I can't !

I just tried to boot from DVD and then follow that link, it doesnt' work as it will say I need to boot in to Windows and try that DVD again!

what else I can do before I restore very old system image ?

boot using winPE disk ?
0
nobusCommented:
yes - you have to change the boot priority first, so you can boot from DVD

if you have the ASSIST button - that can solve the problem also; see here :

I knew this ! I have done that but assist button, but as I said , booted to the DVD do'nt allow you to repair it, it said must run this program within Windows AFTER login.

I need a method to repait it without using system image !

so I can only do system image recovery now as restore point not available ?

I have to rebuild everything before I login to my home still working PC as I am worrying about anything  BAD will be sync back to the working PC, tried that before anyone ?

one thing, can I boot up using a WinPE disk and then put that Windows 8.1 disk on the CD ROM and follow that link to recover it : http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/26095-repair-install-windows-8-a.html ?

using the winPE does not work for repair - it's a live cd  -not an install cd
windows to go is a running windows OS -  again, not a repair disk; but both can be used to copy data
as for outlook - if you have your pst file, you should have everything

this is what i don't understand still about your sync question:
"I have to rebuild everything before I login to my home still working PC as I am worrying about anything  BAD will be sync back to the working PC, tried that before anyone ?"
0
marrowyungSenior Technical architecture (Data)Author Commented:
"as for outlook - if you have your pst file, you should have everything

this is what I think too,

"windows to go is a running windows OS "

so you mean Window to go can't hep me at all ? I see that only Windows 8.1 enterprise edition has that

for sync question, you know some kind of onedrive can sync back and forward copies when people has 2 PC and they use each of them in diff time, like back home. I am worry about any old item will overwrite another PC of mine once I got home.
0
nobusCommented:
windows to go can help for accessing and copying stuff - not for repair, as i posted above
if you're worried about sync - make sure that FIRST you have a complete backup
then your worries are over
0
marrowyungSenior Technical architecture (Data)Author Commented:
"make sure that FIRST you have a complete backup

then I have to do it tonight after I back home.

I just found out that for some reason all restore point gone as said BUT also system image, probably I delete all of them when I tried to free up more disk space ! 256 GB is not that much, 512 GB is far more better for Win10/8.1

so I can't recover from system image so I need Sony's disc to rebuilt everytihng ! I backup the file I want by using WinPE and confirmed with Acronis backup I can use data backup option to do it! so do You think I can :

1) R ebuilt the whole PC using sony's recovery disc.
2) once Windows 8 is up and I will update it to Windows 8.1
3) install all the same application.
4) run Windows update again to install all patches.
5) use ACronis data recorvery tools to restore all most updated user profile and outlook data back to the orignal location
6) start all application as usual and let application reuse all setting at the point before it crazh!
7) as I backup my user and setting, application should be above to use it.

should the above steps works to get back my PC to the point just before it die ?

I am suspecting that some Hardware has problem as during the time I run WinPE, Acronis UI has tried 2 times crash itself !
0
nobusCommented:
256 Gb is plenty for all OS (all my systems run on that, and ran before -  and still on 160 GB)
it's probably your data taking up space
what i would do is :
-use any live cd - ( i use knoppix often for this) to backup the data - or better - hook the disk to a working pc , as i said (faster)
-how you want to install the oS is up to you - from image, recovery cd, or Windows install cd
Pro's & Cons : from image, or recovery cd , you have all drivers+ Sony software; if the windows cd is used, you have to install all the applications, but you miss the Sony software (who wants it anyway?)
in either case - you have to do a lot of updates
i have not used the Acronis backup/recovery tools for years now; so no comment there

>>  I am suspecting that some Hardware has problem <<  in that case, i suggest testing ram and disk - BEFORE reinstalling  - i use UBCD for this :
Hardware diagnostic CD    UBCD

go to the download page, scroll down to the mirror section, and  click on a mirror to start the download
Download the UBCD and make the cd   <<==on a WORKING PC, and boot the problem PC from it
Here 2 links, one to the general site, and a direct link to the download

since the downloaded file is an ISO file, eg ubcd527.iso - so you need to use an ISO burning tool
if you don't have that software, install cdburnerXP : http://cdburnerxp.se/

If you want also the Ram tested - run memtest86+ at least 1 full pass,  - you should have NO errors!

For disk Diagnostics run the disk diag for your disk brand (eg seagate diag for seagate drive)  from the HDD section -  long or advanced diag !  (runs at least for30 minutes)

http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/                        ultimate boot cd
http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/download.html             download page

**  you can make a bootable cd - or bootable usb stick

I just rebuilt the laptop and I found it is interesting that when I use CD to recovery by erasing all data, the DVD rom as problme too !

I backup the user profile before using Acronis 2015 and  I just done the:

1) installing of Windows 8
2) upgrade it to windows 8.1
3) install MS office (so that when I restore profile, it should be able to see my outlook old item.
4) install chrome.

what I plan is next step is to restore the user documentation and setting folder back to the same location, will window, once start up, can see all old item including desktop icon ?

hi,

one thing, as I am now to going to restore outlook mail item, but I didn't backup before laptop fail, so I can only backup  the whole disk using trueimage UI tools, and now I have restore the disk content to a separate folder.

as I want my outlook mail, notes look the same so the outlook item restore back has to MOUNT by outlook I reinstall, what should I do to make this happen?

1) launch outlook and setup all email account.
2) as outlook now can see and setup point to point to new outlook pst/ost file, then I should close outlook and just restore the old file and overwrite the new created pst/ost file by using the same name.
3) restare outlook and outlook should be able to read back my outlook items

will it works ?
0
nobusCommented:
will it work?  if the pst file is ok - it should, if not, you'll find the same problem probably
0
marrowyungSenior Technical architecture (Data)Author Commented:
so I need to setup the outlook first and create an entries i nthe configuation on what email account need to setup, then close outlook and replace the newly created outlook pst/ost with the restored file you also think is the correct sequence ?
0
nobusCommented:
you can  during set up point it directly to the pst file
0
marrowyungSenior Technical architecture (Data)Author Commented:
but that one used by previous outlook before and the format probably not regonised by the new install outlook ?

my hotmail item hasn't been backup to a PST file and they all OST, this I can't point to the old file, this is what I am worrying about ! tried that before?
0
nobusCommented:
ok  -  you do NOT have to mpoint it directly to the pst file; you can do it later, but then you will have 2 "users" installed
hotmail is on the net - has nothing to do with outlook; you simply log in to your account
for backup  - look here :  https://askleo.com/how_do_i_backup_my_hotmail_or_outlookcom_mail/

"hotmail is on the net - has nothing to do with outlook; you simply log in to your account

I can't backup that up as my laptop failed and I can do only disk partition clone and try restore it.

"ok  -  you do NOT have to mpoint it directly to the pst file; you can do it later, but then you will have 2 "users" installed"

what I mean is, once setup the outlook it will create the respective .PST files, and usually it name it as according to the profile name or mailbox name, then I overwrite it with the file with the same name from the email file I restore from disk clone.

it should be able to lie to outlook and outlook just open that files for me, rihgt?

for hotmail item, it only redownload everthing except notes, tried that many time and it just download email items only !
0
nobusCommented:
i said you do not have to back it up - with the new laptop, just login; then you do what you want like before
0
marrowyungSenior Technical architecture (Data)Author Commented:
no., this is not what I mean, I want the old email back ! in your way, I have to download everything again ! and notes will gone too ! this is not what i want.

my plan is simply just
1) create the profile.
2) Let outlook create the file.
3)  then close outlook, replace the new created file by the restored one with the same name
4) open outlook again and hope outlook can read the restored file.

after that just let outlook download all latest email since the time the laptop dead !!

MUCH MUCH FASTER! right ?

redownload all email can take 2-3 days.
0
marrowyungSenior Technical architecture (Data)Author Commented:
finally I come to the final one,

I setup outlook and try to create a profile for mailbox,

I found my old mailbox but they all .ost file not PST file as I didn't backup before PC dead.

I tried:
1) let outlook create necessary new .ost file for me, then I replace the target new created .ost file  with my old .ost file, which has the notes item I want back, but outlook will say it can't open it as it has been configured for use with a different mailbox.

2) I try to copy the old .ost file to the outlook new destination first and see if outlook can see it make use of it.
outlook however create another new .ost file and use that one instead.

so what is the solution ? outlook don't read the old .ost at all.

convert the .ost file to .pst file and import it?

I just need the notes item back.

marrowyungSenior Technical architecture (Data)Author Commented:
I found some tools to recover/convent .OST to PST and I am on the way for it.

however for another PC I found, once upgrade from Windows 8 to 8.1, the USB connection seems having problem and I am now trying to refresh PC instead of reset.

for refresh PC I need the Windows 8.1 source files, right?

So if I have the Windows 8.1 pro ISO I can extract the source from it and use this as the source for the refresh, but how can I streamline/integrate all latest Windows update patches to this ISO and let the refresh process find that updated source, then make use of it so that I don't need to download all patches again once the refresh process is done ?

also how to go to that refresh button ? press F10 when booting up ?
