Veeam SQL backup and VSS writer errors question

Hello all,

I hope you could clarify this for me, I am currently working with some one who has a very old Veeam backup server currently running version 5 and we can not upgrade at the moment.
The Veeam backup is configured as "application aware" so VSS should pause I/O to the SQL server data base to during the backup. At the moment backups appear to fail when SQL VSS writer service is running however as soon as I disable the service the backup appears to complete successfully with no errors. Since we have no support for Veeam at the moment I hope some one could answer this for me, does Veeam require the SQL VSS writer service to backup recover the VM at a later date? Or can I leave it disabled?

I think the problem is really because of that. SQL Server doesn't let any other process to touch the database files and that's why you are getting that issue. Also, isn't the right way to backup a database.
If Veeam doesn't allows you to backup a SQL Server database but only files then you need to use SQL Server to perform native backup on the databases and then you can use Veeam to backup the backup files. Did I make myself clear?
