Bids Project fails to open

I have 2008 r2 BIDS on my Windows 7 machine, but it will not open ".dtproj".  It did open it for months, but then stopped.  The error reads "'cannot be opened because its project type .dtproj is not supported by this version of the application. To open it please use a version
that supports this type of project".

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Hi baytowel.

You have probably already discovered the answer to your issue, but I'll comment in case someone else runs into this problem. We saw this happen at my workplace when a project had been opened in Visual Studio 2010 and upgraded--then BIDS 2008 R2 could no longer open the project and we saw the message that you quote above.

Our issue is documented here:

Thanks for the post.  We have never used 2010 so that shouldn't be the answer.  When we try to follow the directions in your link we get an error that says 'object reference not set to instance of the object'.  This is after a re-install of VS2008 R2.

We have one install that is still working.  It is on the sql server.  If you have any other ideas, please let us know.version info for our install.
Bummer that the quick fix didn't work. I haven't seen any other causes for this specific error personally, but have you tried to run Visual Studio with the "devenv /resetskippkgs" tactic?

When I'm dealing with something weird--maybe having to do with a patch or a 3rd party tool, for example, I'll try the approach that this guy describes:

Devenv.exe /ResetSkipPkgs did the trick.  After issuing it as a line command the projects open normally even through the selection lists.

Thank you very much.
