word 2007 cannot insert document

In word 2007 cannot insert any document - when  going to Insert - Object - create from file - browse to the file and select  Excel (or any other) tick the 'display as an icon'   - Ok but the file does not get inserted, rather  a string of metadata shows in the doc.  Any thoughts

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

This is good: Insert -> Object -> Create from file tab

Do NOT check either the Link to file or the Display as icon boxes and an image if the excel file is inserted. Just navigate to excel file, select the file, click Open, click OK

When you double-click the inserted file image, you can edit directly in your Word file!

Hi  - thank you for the note,

but I need to display the icon, to be opened on click,  (not the whole file in the target doc).
So when I select 'insert as icon' the file does not get inserted, rather  a string of metadata shows in the doc.

sorry - I misunderstood!

I'm using MS Office 2010 & checking the Display as icon box DOES insert an icon/file link.

I tried alt-F9 to see if is a field code problem, but this is not the case!

I'm at a loss to explain why this is not working...
