samba server

Hi: I have configured one Samba server on Red hat 6 and now a days feeling that it is taking to much time in accessing any file on shared folder and also taking to much time in login to the server.

Please help me to troubleshoot and make system easy to access any file on shared folder

Warm Regards

Did something change?
Was it fast before?
How are you connecting?

You need to supply some more information like:

- Has the server a confgured RAID set, if so what kind, it is showing any errors,
- What is the load of the server, any strange processes taking lots of CPU and/or IO,
- You say nothing changed: I doubt this, if nothing changed performance would be as before, think hard: any software installed, any network change, clients updated, extra clients or load etc.
- Describe what you've already done to analyse this issue, do you have a system manager that you can ask,
- How much time does it take to connect,
- What transfer speeds do you get,
- What clients are connecting and how many,
- Is only accessing the folders slow or transfer of data as well
- If you connect through (S)FTP, is it also slow like you describe or not

in which I have installed Red hat 6 and configured only Samba and people are using window7 as client. Please give me some command so that I can check whether some process creating problem or I can monitor how it become slow gradually.

But about your Pentium 4? server, you don't expect too much performance I hope. How many users and how did you install RedHat btw?

when I stopped the services of crontab it start working normal actually it takes the backup of primary HDD to secondary. Please suggest what should i do to take backup of samba data into secondary HDD , which is on other machine.

So top has shown you that a backup job is causing the slower performance. Great. I'd reschedule the cron job to a time after office hours, an easy fix. Pick a time where you know it finishes the backup before the next morning.

This might be issue due to NMB/NetBIOS please check the configuration once..
