How recover a VM in Hyper-v when there are avhd missing

Hi Guys.
I have a little problem.
We have a VM in Hyper-v with a lot of snapshots, eight avhd.
This is a old VM that we used for a Project. This Project is finished and shuted down.
Now we've an audit and I need to use this VM again.
When I want to start the VM I have errors. I went to VM folder and there aren't some avhd... I asked to other admin and he said me that he deleted some avhd from this old VM to do free space on disk.
Now I want to do a merge and I can't because is asking me for other avhd that I don't have...
I can do a merge without those avhd?

I'm hosting in a Windows Server 2008 DataCenter R2.

Your only option is to restore from backup.

The VM has a snapshot, if the snapshot delta is missing, the VM disk is corrupted.

Restore from Backup or Disaster Recovery company.

Why is the AVHD missing ?

We’d all like to think our company’s data is well protected, but when you ask IT professionals they admit the data probably is not as safe as it could be.

Hi Guys, I don't have a backup of this VM.

Was the AVHD deleted accidentally ?
techwise2008Author Commented:
No wasn't accidentally, the other admin deleted the avhs to do free space on disk.

in this case as Andrew Hancock said... there is no alternative except the recovery of the deleted files 100% .. i dont think there is another option....

all the best

If you do not have a backup of the VM, and the data in the VM is important.

1. Contact Microsoft Technical Support, however without the missing AVHD (snapshot delta) the VM maybe corrupted.

2. Contact Kroll Ontrack Data recovery to try and recover the deleted files.

Yes, I'm thinking will use a recovery tool.
Now, I'm copying the VM to other Hyper-v Host for do troubleshooting and don't brake the original VM.

Thanks for the answers
Philip ElderTechnical Architect - HA/Compute/StorageCommented:
There are some critical factors to consider now:
1: Size of the files deleted
2: Time since they were deleted
3: Current file growth since deleted

If the AVHD files were relatively large and current storage has grown into some of the freed up space the likelihood of a recovery is going to be very minimal. Not to put a damper on the situation, but that is the reality of the situation.

I could restore the VM from a Symantec Hyper-v backup.
