Need only one hostname but have different hostnames with same IP address for a machine

Hello,

I have a machine which have two different hostnames but corresponds to the same IP address. In the user's machine, I see hostname1 when I check in properties, but in some other console (name cannot be disclosed) I see hostname2 for the same IP address. Hostname2 is pingable but not hostname1.

I did ipconfig /flushdns and ipconfig /registerdns , but it did not get resolved to one hostname.

Could someone please help me out with the steps to get only one hostname instead of 2?

Thanks in advance!

when you ping hostname2, to which IP it is pinging?

Does it pings to same IP as hostname1 machine has?

In that case actually hostname1 is physical one and you need to retain the same

U should remove hostname2 (dns record I guess) manually from Host(A) and PTR as well

Also ensure that Hostname1 Host(A) \ PTR record is pointing to correct IP address as machine

Then run ipconfig /flushdns & dnscmd /clearcache on DNS server from elevated command prompt

@Mahesh, there are two scenario:
 Scenario 1: there is hostname1 and the DNS corresponding to it is hostname2.xyz.yz.com . If I perform nslookup, I get two different IPs for hostname1 and hostname2.

Scenario 2: There are few cases where both the hostname have same IP.

I am talking about 17-20 machines having these two scenarios.

Please suggest what should I do to make the DNS in sync with the hostname.

@trgrassijr55, the OS is Win7
HostName2 is available as computer account?

If not, remove Hostname2 dns record from dns

@Mahesh, hostname2 also is showing as an account and hostname2 is what is showing in the user's machine's My Computer->Properties.
