For this error:

Illustrator tends to loose the link to its images. Try to find this picture and others which may be asked for and put it next to the Illustrator file and then open the file.

If all the images are in one folder and you know there they are you can use this Replace and point Illustrator to it.

For testing one file, try to click the Ignore button. If the file opens up, but without the pictures then the problem is that it does not find where the linked images are. And you will have to help Illustrator.

How are you moving the files over between the macs?
Is Illustrator the same version on both?
If you send a file from new mac to old mac do you get the same error?

When you try to open a file on new mac from the old mac, to you get any error messages?

Are moving the application files or the document files?

1. I move the files between the macs with a USB, external drive or Airdrop
2. illustrator is the same version in both macs except photoshop
3. I didn't try to work on file that was from the new mac on the old one but i think it will give us the same error
4. sometimes it gives me error messages and sometimes it just wouldn't open

This means that a component that has been placed in an illustrator file is not locatable. The link doesn't need to be found, you can choose to "IGNORE" the link. This means though that large parts of the file/picture may be missing.

For the images to work corruptly the missing files will need to be located. Manually this could be nearly impossible or at least seem that way. Software like http://markzware.com/products/flightcheck/ can help by automating the process. The automation can also find fonts links etc and "package" the various components in single location.

Good file management also can help and doesn't cost any many.

If you use Ignore and open the file you can go to the Links panel and find the path to the pictures.
