SBS 2008 Migration & Exchange

Hi All

We currently have an SBS 2008 server but will shortly be adding a full Windows 2012 R2 server. If we migrate the DC services to the Windows 2012 Server, how does this affect the operation of Exchange and will it continue operating. If so, how long for?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

You can add the server as an additional domain controller.
However as it is an SBS server is must keep all of the FSMO roles and remain as a global catalog.
If you want to remove DC functionality from the SBS server then you must move Exchange to another server. You cannot remove the DC functionality from the SBS server.
