Where is the traffic from (server name, IP address).

Hi;

With a help of a friend, I need to open up a port in which i need to do enable in Windows firewall. That friend asked me, Where is the traffic from (server name, IP address).

My question is that is it the IP address of the server or is it my IP address? (I am under VPN while reaching to that server).

If you're NATing, then it's the IP address of your NAT device.

If you're directly connected, it's the IP address of your server.

Strictly speaking, it's the public-facing address of whatever interface you're going to connect to it over. For example, if you're using a VPN and your address on /dev/tun0 is 10.10.1.8, then that's the IP you use.

KISS - Keep it simple silly - provide your server's address and the public IP address (go to www.whatismyip.com) and tell them both.  They, presumably, know which one they need.

This seem backwards. I would expect the port to be opened on the server's firewall and not your computer...just curious.
Let's start with this.
- Where are you trying to connect to. (Server) (Open port here)
- What device are you using to connect (that's your from address)

The reverse is possible if it's the server that is trying to run a plugin or agent on your computer
