red hat as virtual platform on windows 8.1 touch laptop

I have a lenovo laptop that has Windows 8.1 Touch screen. I want to setup a virtual OS on my laptop I want to use RED Hat Linux cause I want to understand Linux. I'm totally clueless what should I use as a Virtual technology and can I install RedHAT linux using it as a lamp server? Is there free Virtual Clients and is Red hat still free to setup and use?  and will this work and not screw up my laptop it's 64 bit?

You can setup RH virtually on anything that has enough specs to handle.  I would suggest using VMWare workstation.
Red Hat is free to install, but to update, they require a subscription. CentOS is the free RPM based distro that I would suggest using.  It is actually a no-cost solution.
Another option, if you want to play around with a linux shell, is to get a few-bucks-a-month VPS (check lowendbox.com), these VPSs you can re-install many different *nix versions very quickly, and you don't have to worry about trashing your laptop.
