Performance with iSCSI backup over a VPN site to site connection.


I have a VPN tunnel site to site connection set up that connects multiple remote office together.

Currently each office is running a Window 2012 R2 Std server. So my plan is to set up a iSCSI backup server on a Windows 2012 R2 Std server at my central office to back up the multiple site server over my existing VPN network.

I understand that I need a fast network connection plus Gigabit NIC, CAT6e cables, and switches to get the best result; however that set up is not option because of cost. I do have a gigabit switch, 1GB NIC on the server and a 20/20MB fiber connection at the central office where the iSCSI backup server will be stored. All the remote site has similar hardware but with 50MB/12MB business class ISP connection.  

I'm able to set this up, however before I do I want know if this is even worth trying because some of my location still have 100MB CAT5e cabling and the internet connection is not the fastest. I'm afraid this will only make a small difference in transfer speed, not enough to invest the time and money in.

Also, most likely I would be running a backup software like ShadowProtect.

Is there some else out there with my similar network running a iSCSI backup server to perform remote backup? If so, please let me know how's your backup performance like.

Best bet is to seed (back up the remote server on site,then ship image file to your main backup site) the back up server first,then set up a block level backup across WAN.
It's a really bad architecture to try to do what you are doing.

What is on those remote servers?

Here's what I do for my remote servers, which are domain controller/file/print servers. I use DFS-Replication to replicate all file data back to my main office, and then I backup that central copy.

Otherwise you should use a backup system that supports incremental backups. iSCSI is not meant for WAN, especially high latency, low bandwidth. It is just asking for trouble.

Backing up over a WAN link is never a great idea.but is doable with a block level backup that only backs up delta changes to a file.

Shadow Protect as well as others can do that as well as DFS.

Folks are using hosted iSCSI solutions from 3rd parties

Kevinhsieh - My remote servers are running as a Domain Controller: file server, DNS, DHCP, AD, and DFS.  I have DFS set up and all my remote server are back up locally at the site. For some reason, I just thought, maybe iSCSI technology will be fast enough and allow me to back up the remote server to my central office with my current network setup; hoping this is the solution to help streamline my backups.

However I still think iSCSI is possible over WAN if you have the current network infrastructure in placed, but in my case making this happen will be far too expensive, not worth it.
