L3 Sub-interfaces on Nexus


When I use L3 sub interface with command encapsulation dot1Q must the vlan be created on switch.

I ask because I have multiple L3 sub interface between 2 Nexus switches but the vlan is not created on switch only have the command encapsulation dot1Q  50 and it still works but vlan 50 is not created on switch.
Please advice

According to the Cisco documentation, you configure the subinterface and associate this subinterface to a VLAN, so yes, the VLAN either needs to exist or be created beforehand.

You've got an L3 capable switch, you want a layer-3 trunk, but instead of an SVI, you use a layer-3 physical interface.

Just out of curiosity, why would you do this?

It is impossible to work with L3 Sub interface without creating a VLAN. I mean you cannot pass traffic from that interfce. But, if that interface is UP UP  then your L3 interface will work. You cannot pass traffic inside of this interface but due to L3 routing, you may receive traffic to your interface.
