I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

What is the distance between the microphone and the speaker?
What is the distance from the microphone to the recorder?
What is the noise environment like?

A directional microphone is very much like a telescope, it must be pointed precisely.
Do you know where your speaker will be located , or do you need remote control tracking for the microphone?

For an an optimal system you need directivity, amplification, and filtering or other post processing.

In addition to the parabolic and shotgun microphones that ozo has mentioned, you could use a phased array of microphones.  With adequate computer storage and processing, you steer the array in post processing, zoom in and filter different locations after the fact.  This is the sort of technology the Navy uses to listen for submarines.
