Troubleshooting sbs 2011 Remote desktop remote web access

I know just enough to be dangerous with our SBS 2011 standard server. We use logmein for machines when we need to get into machines.

But I was remoted into the server via logmein. Wanted to access a desktop that didn't have logmein installed or turned on.

On the server went to https://server/remote  tried connecting to the desktop computer but got 'your computer can't connect to the remote computer because the remote desktop gateway server address requested and the certificate subject name do not match. Contact your network admin for assistance',

That's me and I don't know what to do. Any thoughts? the machine was set up a couple years ago, don't use RDP. Don't think I didn't setup  certificates beyond what the wizards might have asked about when first setting it up.

Hello,

Its because you will need to use the url that you setup in the Internet Address Wizard when the server was setup.  Typically for new installs this will be remote.domain.co.uk /.com/whatever.

You will be getting the message because the certificate on the Remote Desktop Server has a different name to https://server/remote.  So you need to go to https://remote.domain.com

You can double check the certificate name by opening the SBS Console, clicking on network>Connectivity>click on certificate and click View Certificate properties from the right.  You need to use the 'issued to' name.

Hope that makes sense.

THANKS.  WORKED GREAT!

a couple more questions:

can't tell if there's someone using the machine right now vs they just didn't log out, or locked the computer right?

for that remote.domain.com to work from inside the domain to work - that's split domain, right?  just part of sbs or we set that up on our own a while ago (that remote.domain.com goes to an internal IP address rather than use the public nameserver for domain.com on the web and then it would fail)?

No worries,

If there is another user logged in then it should warn you prior to logging in.  If you are logging in as the same username as the person already logged in then you will take over their session and they will get a locked screen.

remote.domain.com will be a DNS record setup on the SBS.  This will have been created when you ran the internet address wizard originally.   If you wanted to use this remotely then you would need to setup an external DNS record if you haven't already.
