Mail Distribution Group fails to update on workstation Outlook 2010 after deletion and recreation

One of my email distribution groups got deleted from Exchange 2010 (I fumble fingered it). I recreated it on the server, but it doesn't work anymore on Outlook.

I am unable to send email with the Distribution Group Alias , the email address of the Distribution Group and I cannot expand the list. I suspected a stale cache entry so I deleted the cached entry for the Distribution Group on Outlook and then I forced Outlook to "Download the Global Address Book" to get it to work.  

That is not a good long term solution for a bunch of users.

Why is this failing in the first place?
How can I address the issue long term?

No I dont think that will work for you. Take a look at the following MS article.

What I would reccomend doing would be open ADSI edit and look at a similar distribution group. Specifically looking at the textEncodedOrAddress entry. If you can understand the structure of that groups X400 address you can probably recreate it for the group you deleted.

You may also need to update the group you deleted proxyaddresses attribute to include the new x400 addres.

The reason this is failing is because you are trying to send to the address using the cached email info. Internally email is not sent using smtp but rather the X400 address. When you deleted the group and recreated it you may have set the name and smtp alias to be exactly the same however it probably now has a new X400 address.

Cleaning out the cache is the only way to fix this issue.

If there are 1,000's of users then this can be very disruptive. That must be a way to kill the cache entry or entries to prevent whole sale addressing chaos.

You could try to take a look at the address format of some of your other distribution groups and try to recreate the x400 address. You would need to know what it was before hand and recreate that exactly.

Are you saying that if I looked at an outlook client and discovered the x400 address and used that for the recreated list that I would be ok?
