Windows Server 2012R2 Essentials

Hello,
I looking for cheapest solution to upgrade my company domain. Actually we are using 1 DC with Windows Server 2003R2 and 1 DC with Windows Server 2008R2. I'm wondering if it is possible to join Windows Server 2012R2 as a member server or DC for existing forest/domain ( Functionality level 2003 ) ?

Thanks

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

You can join the essentials product to an existing domain, but not as a member server. It will be a DC, and it will need to take over all FSMO roles to comply with the licensing requirements of that particular product.
