Audio playback and recording through these earbuds

These $8 Maxwell earbuds from Walmart are perfect for my android phone and the microphone is in exactly the right place http://www.walmart.com/ip/Maxell-In-Ear-Bud-with-Microphone-Black/17756632.  No clip or adjustment is needed.

I would like to use them with Skype on my laptop also.  What do I need to do on my laptop to make this a reality?

Assistance is greatly appreciated.

Assuming that your laptop has separate mic and speaker ports, here's what you need:

Great.  I will try that.  It does have separate mike and speaker ports, as well as USB.  Is there an adapter without the cord that would work?

Also, I did plug it into my laptop speaker port, but my laptop continued to play through the built-in speakers.

More info requested.  Thank you.

Just plug it in one of your audio ports, for instance if you plug it in the mic, it will work for mic only, then you'll receive audio via laptop speakers, if plug into your headset piece you'll hear through the headset and speak through the speakers on the laptop, windows however on some laptop will allow you to use both through the headset.

Not that I know of. There are many brands out there, but all the ones I found have a small cord/cable.

> Also, I did plug it into my laptop speaker port, but my laptop continued to play through the built-in speakers.

That's because the combined audio/mic jack has a Tip/Ring/Ring/Sleeve (TRRS) configuration. The speaker jack is expecting a Tip/Ring/Sleeve (TRS) config. That's what the adapter cable handles — splits the audio and mic of the TRRS jack into separate TRS jacks. Regards, Joe

You guys were both partially right.  Close requested with A Grade.  Thanks for the help!!

I had some updates pending I rebooted as well.  The first time I tried, the playback was through the PC, not the headphones, but now that I have rebooted after my completed update, everything works!

The speaker and the mic on the headphones work if they are plugged into only the speaker port on the laptop.  Very interesting!!!

Now I have a solution for all our computers that could potentially cost even less than $8 each.

If we're both partially right, why did the other expert get all 500 points?

Because I made a mistake and marked myself as one of the people instead of you.  I have requested a correction.

Joe do you have an explanation as to why the Maxwell headphones now appear to work perfectly for audio and speaker through only one speaker jack?

If so, how might I find even cheaper ones?

Fair enough.

Thank you for that.

Depends on the circuitry in the laptop's port. It's probably designed to handle both TRS and TRRS jacks.

> how might I find even cheaper ones?

I presume you mean 3.5mm earbuds with a mic that is less than $7.24. Amazon has many — just search for "3.5mm earbuds with mic". Here are a few (all prices include free shipping):

$2.63
http://www.amazon.com/Stylish-3-5mm-Earphone-Control-iPhone/dp/B00ISMZG60/

$4.48
http://www.amazon.com/Stereo-3-5mm-Hands-Free-Headset-MP3/dp/B007Q1MNQA/

$5.85
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Tangle-Stereo-Headset-Microphone/dp/B00HBUIV8A/

$5.97
http://www.amazon.com/Earphone-Headphone-Headset-Control-Cellphone/dp/B00EVLGH38/

I can't speak to how well they work — don't have any of them. Regards, Joe

I'll let you know how all this turns out.  We are looking to put some old PC's back into commission.

This is the lowest so far

Wow.  Found 3.5mm earbuds with mic and in-line vol control $2.63 on the first link you guys provided!  This is outstanding.  If this goes according to the plan, I will be able to add audio and recording capabilities (including vol control), with one one wire. This should work for all our PC's and laptops!

Hi EE Admin,
I received an email this morning saying that the asker accepted a solution to this question. However, the closing is still in error. He meant to accept my post, not his own, as one of the answers:
Because I made a mistake and marked myself as one of the people instead of you. I have requested a correction.
I just wanted to let EE Admin know that the close is still wrong. Regards, Joe

I see a request has been file, so I re read the post, its fair to have it changed, he has accepted his own post hence why the no points awarded to you Joe, I think you or the author has to submit directly to admin for them to respond.

How does a member do that? The only mechanism I'm aware of is the RFA, but since the author already filed an RFA, that is unavailable now. So I don't know how to notify EE Admin directly, which is why I simply added a standard post to this thread — in the hopes that an Admin will see it. But if you have another idea on how to contact them, please let me know. Thanks, Joe

Still waiting on earbuds to arrive.  Apparently the excellent price meant that they had to be shipped from another planet.  I'll let you know when the spaceship arrives with my new all powerful (one audio port required) earbuds.  I'm excited!

Joe Winograd, Fellow&MVEDeveloperCommented:
Thanks for the update. Will be interesting to see how well they work at that price.

I am generally VERY impressed with Amazon shipping.  They always give you a return label to print with every order and shipping is usually quick.

This is CRAZY http://screencast.com/t/usfqZN9h

Joe Winograd, Fellow&MVEDeveloperCommented:
This is because shipping is by the third-party (JCB Park), not Amazon:

inexpensive earbuds
Seems that the seller is going downhill:

JCB Park feedback
The good new is that the price is down to $2.50, if they ever ship.
0
frugalmuleAuthor Commented:
Not here yet.  We will see.  It sure does give a good option for a company that has lots of computers but no audio or mic.
0
Joe Winograd, Fellow&MVEDeveloperCommented:
Well, for a large organization with lots of computers, a small difference on each one could add up to a nice savings, but for an individual with one (or a few) computers, I'd be very tempted to pay an extra buck or two per unit in order to get timely delivery. Thanks for the update. Regards, Joe
0
frugalmuleAuthor Commented:
I agree.  This was actually part of a larger project so I will accept the solution because I think I have settled on Amazon regardless of whether we get this shipment or not.

So let's keep this discussion going.

1. Find a low priced product that has 'some' real value for a customer.

$2.63 Earbuds with free shipping http://www.amazon.com/Stylish-3-5mm-Earphone-Control-iPhone/dp/B00ISMZG60/
Even if I have to get this from another vendor besides JCB Park, something like these are an exceptional choice because they are incredibly cheap, have in-line playback, recording, and volume controls.  and it appears that they even contain the technology that will allow them to work on most laptops through one playback port for both recording and playback.

2. Find some way to monetize that item through affiliate partnership.

I understand that I can sell Amazon products, even those through a third-party vendor, and make some profit on them through the affiliate link program.

I have no idea how this works but am anxious to explore it.  I will be trying to set it up for this product and put it up for sale using the affiliate link on FrugalMule.com

I know nothing about the Amazon Affiliate Programs, so I can't add any value to your new question, but I'll keep an eye on it. Btw, I went to your website, clicked on the get in touch link, and this error appeared:
