Sharepoint2013 - Host OS Upgrade

we have  a 2 tier sharepoint architecture, with one sql server as backend and one windows 2008 r2 server as IIS + Sharepoint frontend. we are in need to upgrade the OS of this front end server (to windows sevrer 2012 r2) . i was planning to create a new server on windows server 2012 r2 and have a new farm created on it (or is it better to join it to the existing farm) and then create a web applcaition on it with same URLS and point it to use the same content database (we will make the required DNS changes for URLs already in use to continue to work by pointing to the new server) .

If you can pls advise if the above approach is fine or if there is any recommendation.

regards,

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

What do you use sharepoint for and how much data and sites are we talking about? I am not all that familiar with SP 2013 but I know in 2007 we could move or copy websites by using SP's designer to backup and restore. Here is a link to a similar question as yours and here is another on moving sharepoint 2010 to a new server that may give you some added insights

The response to sharepoint questions on EE are not always that good so I also use this site, maybe this will help since it seems what I provided was not all that helpful https://www.yammer.com/itpronetwork/#/threads/inGroup?type=in_group&feedId=3903794.
