I have a laptop that i cannot access the internet through a browser. I am able to ping any website through ip address or web address.
Able to run win update but not update malwarebytes, hitman Pro, etc...
I have ran spyware and virus scans, little found, nothing major. I have reset browser settings in IE, fresh install of chrome. internet options doesn't use a proxy.

I half think firewall, but cannot find where issue is..

Try disabling your firewall as a test only. See if you can browse with FW off. Turn it right back ON.

Look in c:\windows\sytem32\drivers\etc\hosts.  The host file should have only comments. Something may have added something to hosts.

Try resetting TCP/IP and Flush DNS

Open cmd.exe with Run as Administrator
Then  netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
Also, ipconfig /flushdns followed by net stop dnscache followed by net start dnscache
Then restart the computer

- disabling firewall, yield same results
- c:\windows\sytem32\drivers\etc\    hosts -icalendar file, hosts.old, lmhosts.sam, networks, protocol, services, tmvsthfss.bin, tmvsthfud.bin
-ran all commands, restarted, still no access..

spravtek: No, I receive "unable to connect" for Mozilla or "Cannot display the webpage" for IE..

Could you try to telnet to, for example, google.com on port 80 in a cmd box...

telnet www.google.com 80

Does this also give an error?

Vista is now pretty old and does not have some of the modern repair tools.

Try System File Checker. Open cmd.exe with Run as Administrator and run SFC /SCANNOW. Allow to complete and restart the computer. See if that helps.

I do not know if you can run Repair Install from the Vista DVD. If not, you may be looking at reinstalling Vista. If you think this, consider upgrading to Windows 7 or 8.1
Try ;
Netsh winsock reset
Netsh interface ip reset reset.txt

That is pretty much a copy of my post above and has already been tried.
Also check your AV Software may include Firewall feature that could cause your issue. last check your ACL on your router see if they may have changed, if not, Try a reboot of your router.

John - apologies.

You are probably going to have to reinstall the operating system, and so I suggest you abandon Vista and move to a newer system.
