How to determine SSL transactions per second in Exchange

Looking for load balancers for our Exchange environment, along with our web servers and Citrix, but need to know what our SSL transactions are per second in order to scale out the right load balancer.  How would I determine this?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

There is no hard and fast method because there are so many different variables.
For example, with Exchange it depends on the version, because Exchange 2010 doesn't go through the load balancer for MAPI traffic, where as Exchange 2013 uses Outlook Anywhere so everything goes them.

When I am doing scaling, I usually start with the number of users, then increase from there based on client types (ActiveSync, Outlook etc), shift patterns etc.

Although if it is a small site (sub 150) then the entry level load balancers are usually more than adequate.

The other thing to consider is deploying a virtual load balancer rather than physical ones. That give you flexibility. Most of the vendors will allow you to increase the throughput by just changing a key.

If you are still wanting numbers, then if you don't have the traffic going through a single point already, then you are going to struggle to get anything accurate.
You can get some information from perfmon counters for IIS, and there are various tools that can pull them from Apache for you as well.

I presume you have seen the calculators like this one from Kemp?
