What version of Adobe Acrobat? And what version of Office?  The common cause for this error is an older version of Acrobat and newer version of Office.

I have Acrobat V11 and Outlook 2013 and the combination works well.

Outlook is 2013 ...
does Acrobat need to be 11 .. shouldn't it work on 10 also?

I used Acrobat V10 with Outlook 2010. Acrobat V11 has been out for a long time now and that is all I ever used on Windows 8 / 8.1 with Outlook V2013.

Can you consider upgrading? I think that may be the issue.

I just went back and looked. I got Adobe Acrobat V11 from Adobe in October 2012 (2 and half years ago) while still on Windows 7 and Office 2010. I upgraded to Office 2013 later and Acrobat V11 works fine.

I think you need to upgrade Adobe.

why doesn't Adobe 10 and Office 2013 work together  <-- I have been through this myself. It is because Adobe built PDF maker so tightly interwoven with Outlook (and Office) that it does not necessarily know about new versions. I see V11 has been out for longer than normal, so Adobe may have adapted the new version better.
