Setting up Direct Debit online

A small client wishes to collect recurring payments by direct debit and wants this to be actioned online. Not sure where to start with this, I can see organisations that will do it for me but wondering if we can operate directly with the bank.

Has anybody experience of setting up an online DD payments system and is it better to work directly with the clients bank or to use a 'merchant' type service.

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

There are several ways to do this.

You can use Paypal's Adaptive Payments functionality to do the recurring payments. Or you can write your own recurring processor that submits ACH transactions to the client's bank.

Either way, it is going to take some development unless you are using one of the pre-made e-commerce packages that has a plugin for this.
