Make sure paragraph marks (all paragraph marks) are turned off and make sure that text boundaries have been turned off.

Try the document type: if DOC save it as DOCX. If DOCX save it as DOC and test.

If settings are not the issue, make a new blank document, open the problem document, copy the text from old to new and save the new document with a new name.

Hi Michael Murphy,

Try double-clicking the black line. Does it disappear?
Also, can you confirm that it's not a footer like the ViewMaster or one of those that put lines on every page. If you have any footers just delete them and see if that helps.

Can you post a screenshot of the doc or the part with the line?
Could be a bottom page border - changeable via the Page Background group on the Page Layout tab.

If none of the guesses help, I suggest that you post the document (redacted if necessary).
