ios query

I currently have on my switch 2950: c2950-i6q4l2-mz.121-22.ea6.bin

note:

c2950-i6q4l2-mz.121-22.ea14.bin - this was free to download yesterday via my basic account.

question 1.  what is the difference  although I presume ea14.bin has more feature functionality than ea6.bin  ?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Actually, these "smaller" udpates are usually NOT features and functionality. It's more about fixing bugs and security issues.
It's a dry read, but the exact changes should be near the end of this document:

qns1.  so I understand that if I locate the command instructions in the 'url' you suggested, that the below will 'overwrite' and upgrade the old ios ie ea6.bin to ea14.bin  ?

Using the CLI to Upgrade a Catalyst 2950 LRE or Catalyst 2940 Switch

KimputerCommented:
Yes, if you follow the steps carefully, and your switch is indeed a 2950LRE or 2940, then it will be upgraded and overwritten.

as I have deleted my ios due to having copy flash to tftp timeout issues, even though I can ping vica versa, im now stuck in: rommon mode so currently running:

switch:set baud 115200

copy xmodem: flashc2950........ea6.bin

currently running hyperterminal

once the above is complete I will attempt overwrite: ea14.bin - and confirm I can do this.

I am not sure if there is a quicker way although hyperterminal states just over 1 hour to complete

Just let it complete, have patience.

yes I am I only have 55 mins left.  I was only asking because if there was a quicker way, I was going to suggest I have a thread out there already I could have allocated you the points if you know of a quicker way, just  so I no another way in the future.

I am hoping this: copy flash tftp timeout issue was due to a corrupt ios, but really not sure as I could ping vica versa.

all in all I have 3 switches to do as thought surely my ios could not be corrupted although they have been switched off for about 2 years.

resolution:  I uninstalled tftpd32 from xp and installed clean: cisco tftp server v1.1 and when I ran:

copy flash tftp - this was successful

note:

I then uninstalled tftpd32 from my win 2008 dc/ad/dns/dhcp and installed clean: cisco tftp server v1.1 and when I ran:

copy flash tftp - unsuccessful showing same time out error.

question 1.  does anyone have an answer for that as I cannot keep having to connect to my xp machine just to do backups for example and (no I do not wish to use VMware as yet)  ?

I have also tried to overwrite my 2950 (ea6.bin with newer ea14.tar) with the following:

1st archive command type:

http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10854

sw1#archive tar /xtract tftp://192.168.0.3/c2950-i6q4l2-tar.121-22.ea14.tar flash:

error opening tftp://192.168.0.3/c2950-i6q412-tar.121-22.ea14 (no such file or directory) - not sure why this is  ?

2nd archive type command:

if I attempt to use the below command to overwrite this does not work either:

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/lan/catalyst2950/software/release/12-1_22_ea14/release/notes/OL23783.html#wp999426

the reason why the below command does not work is because "download-sw" & so on is not in the help ? as an option:

archive download-sw /overwrite /reload tftp:[[//location]/directory]/image-name.tar

Seems you really have to fix your tftp server first. Have a server where you can see realtime activity, that way you know what's really going on.
0
mikey250Author Commented:
yes of course but I don't know where or what to download to see this 'realitime activity' to know what I am missing as followed youtube video configuration and set ip address successful but puttyp 'tftp timeout'.

i have since resolved my tftpd32 issue.  it was because i did not allow the windows 2008 firewall for udp 69.
