I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

this is not an error, it's a preference.

is this a valid email address (regular format: hostmaster@abmcatering.co.uk): hostmaster.abmcatering.co.uk?
Dan McFaddenSystems EngineerCommented:
According to online DNS checks (http://www.nabber.org/projects/dnscheck/), the SOA and subsequent DNS zone info looks fine.  The SOA cannot use a standard formatted email address, so as it is configured, it looks fine.

This entry is correct for the SOA:  hostmaster.abmcatering.co.uk

Have you verified that SMTP services for your domain are functioning?

Dan
Jan SpringerCommented:
these are the MX records for your domain:

abmcatering.co.uk.      14400      IN      MX      20 abmcatering.co.uk.mx5.fusemail.net.
abmcatering.co.uk.      14400      IN      MX      30 abmcatering.co.uk.mx6.fusemail.net.
abmcatering.co.uk.      14400      IN      MX      10 abmcatering.co.uk.mx4.fusemail.net.

and none of them answer when connecting to tcp port 25.

Everything is fine - SMTP all good.. I thought I would post this to check if its anything that needs to be fixed? I have my hosted email company filtering my email before it reaches exchange..

I have created an email address hostmaster@abmcatering.co.uk
Dan McFaddenSystems EngineerCommented:
It appears that the SMTP servers response time is unusually high.  I would contact your hosting support services and have them verify that your domain is setup for email services and that the 3 servers ID'ed as MX are functioning properly.

C:\>nslookup
Default Server: xxxx.yyy.com
Address: x.x.x.x

> set type=MX
> abmcatering.co.uk
Server: xxxx.yyy.com
Address: x.x.x.x

Non-authoritative answer:
abmcatering.co.uk MX preference = 10, mail exchanger = abmcatering.co.uk.mx4.fusemail.net
abmcatering.co.uk MX preference = 20, mail exchanger = abmcatering.co.uk.mx5.fusemail.net
abmcatering.co.uk MX preference = 30, mail exchanger = abmcatering.co.uk.mx6.fusemail.net

abmcatering.co.uk.mx4.fusemail.net internet address = 192.162.217.4
abmcatering.co.uk.mx5.fusemail.net internet address = 192.162.216.4
abmcatering.co.uk.mx6.fusemail.net internet address = 192.162.217.4

that's as good as not answering up.  that type of delay will cause a lot of bounces.
jag bAuthor Commented:
so this is mainly from the hosted email side error I believe yes?
Dan McFaddenSystems EngineerCommented:
Its from whomever fusemail.net is.

Dan
jag bAuthor Commented:
I just rang FuseMail (manage our hosted email sec) basically there SMTP time is slower as it travel to them before reaching my exchange... is this why the SOA error would be then?
Jan SpringerCommented:
if they are forwarding the mail via an SMTP configuration and not accepting delivery, then yes, that will have an impact.
jag bAuthor Commented:
basically the email travels into their server - filtered then into my exchange, my firewall has IP addresses given by them to allow and block port 25...
Dan McFaddenSystems EngineerCommented:
Take a step back... there is no error in your SOA.

That's been established.  Whether or not email is being delivered is a completely different issue.

Dan
Jan SpringerCommented:
that's what i said out of the gate, it's a preference not a problem.

what type of firewall do you have?
Dan McFaddenSystems EngineerCommented:
just because your firewall allows access on port 25/tcp, doesn't mean that email can be relayed.  You would also have to tell your SMTP relay that a specific IP address is allowed to relay.

Then that email address that you are sending an email to must have some form of a record in your email system that tells the server what mailbox to route that email to.  (simple explanation).

Dan
Jan SpringerCommented:
this is not a mail relay issue, it's forwarding via SMTP configuration to final recipient server.
jag bAuthor Commented:
this has cleared a few things for me to know look at
Jan SpringerCommented:
check that the firewall isn't causing the delay.

i do exactly this at the provider level -- act as MX and forward to an exchange server for final delivery.
jag bAuthor Commented:
the firewall I have is a DrayTek vigor
Jan SpringerCommented:
i am not familiar with this product.  you might want to disable inspecting smtp inbound to see if that corrects the delay.
