VMWare IPMI SEL Alert

Hi Expert,

I always found my VMWare report the Alert IPMI SEL. I am trying to clear the log but after a few days, it will come back. I am using VMWare vSphere Essentials Edition 5.0 (I am planning to upgrade it to 5.5).

Make sure

1. You are using the vendor version of ESXi, e.g. HP, IBM, Dell.

2. Ensure vendor firmware is using the latest from vendor websites.

3. Ensure the latest version of ESXi 5.0 us in use.

4. Reset the LOG at the POST/BOOT page.

5. Check the LOG for hardware errors.


This is a very common issue which occurs, and gets reported on EE.

It looks like int16 overflow (miscounting of IPMI log records)
update BIOS, management processor code, clear management logs in ESXi, and in management processor.

Give thanks for two experts. We are using IBM x3650M3 as VMWare server. I have tried to reset the log. But I don't know the root cause. I am planning to upgrade VMWare to 5.5 Update 2 (latest) and also update server BIOS firmware. Hope it can resolve the issue.

It will not resolve the issue. We have that sporadically on x3650 M4 too. It is just the way to make error go away. There is vmware KB article on subject that says to upgrade firmware to latest ibm UXSP level. So far it did not help.
