I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

It's easier to provide this diagram of the communications between vCenter and Hosts.

VMs are installed on the Hosts.

To compliment Andy's diagram, these components communicate with each other using agents (services). On ESXi, the hypervisor, the agent is hostd. He controls the start up of all other services related to the hypervisor. If you connect ESXi to vCenter, the vpxa agent on the hypervisor communicates with the vpxd agent on vCenter. The VMs are essentially running processes in memory on the hypervisor.

The vpx agents communicate about things like vm creation and conifguration, cluster configurations, vmotion, etc and pass that information to hostd.
There are a lot of sub-services, but they are all managed by hostd which communicates with the vmKernel.
