I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Just, mount the ISO, and run the setup to install vCenter Server 5.1 U3, it will detect the existing version and update all the components.

and then Install Update Manager.

This is the risk with any update, it can go wrong, compare to a new installation.

To mitigate any risk, ensure you have valid backups you can roll back to if the upgrade/update fails.

Even recently VMware Support have stated, in the event of an upgrade/update failure, completely remove vCenter Server, and re-install, because all the data is contained in the SQL database.
