How do I stop certificate handshakes on sql server 2012 even after mirroring has been stopped?

I have two sql server 2012 instances where one of the databases uses log shipping.  There is a monitor server in place.  Log shipping is working fine.  Formerly, these servers were in a mirroring configuration and the current monitor server was formerly the witness server in that configuration.  Mirroring has been stopped.  I discovered recently that the former witness server is trying to handshake the former principal server and is failing filling the log with the following:

Database mirroring login attempt failed with the error:  'Connection handshake failed.  The certificate used by this endpoint  was not found:  Certificate expired.  Use DBCC CHECKDB......

What I want to do is kill the attempt to login by the former Witness altogether since mirroring has been stopped on all the servers.

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Ok folks, stand down.  I got the errors to stop by connecting to the former Principal server and issuing the following command:

ALTER ENDPOINT <datbasename> STATE = STOPPED

I am still wondering why the connection attempts were being made even after SET PARTNER OFF was issued and mirroring was stopped.

Thanks!
