Cannot install google usb driver for Nexus 5 on Windows 8.1 64bit

Thaidog used Ask the Experts™
I am trying to follow guides that show to install the Nexus 5 drivers from google form the SDK however the drivers in the zip file that I download do not seem compatible with Windows 8.1 as they are not seen and the Wizard just ends saying it could not find a diver for my device.

This is the guide I first tried:

I looked for the "ADB composite device" in this article but it is not found on my system even after listing Hidden devices:

Any ideas on how to get the google use drivers installed for he Nexus 5 on Windows 8.1?

Hi  Thaidog
Why do you need Google?
Aren't you just trying to connect your Nexus to window's 8.1? to transfer files?
Take a look at this different solution
Nexus 5 can't connect to Win8 PC via USB.
If this wrong for you please let me know what you are trying achieve.

You need just "installer"
Then USB driver is somewhere near end of installer options. For me it works with SEMC and LG etc.

By installer do you mean the installer_r24.1.2-windows.exe binary listed for windows on your linked page?

Yes, installer, not full SDK bundle.

This downloads the drivers but does not actually install them. What's installed is this:

Mode LastWriteTime Length Name
---- ------------- ------ ----
-a--- 3/22/2015 7:52 PM 236 NOTICE.txt
-a--- 3/22/2015 7:52 PM 1721576 WdfCoInstaller01009.dll
-a--- 3/22/2015 7:52 PM 1002728 winusbcoinstaller2.dll
-a--- 3/22/2015 7:52 PM 2152176 WUDFUpdate_01009.dll

When I try to run the update drivers wizard from Device Manager it does not find any drivers when I browse to that directory and thus fails to install... maybe I'm missing something?

@ Merete - I don't have an ACER Device listed in device manger like the link you give has. I do not just want to transfer files. The reason I need these drivers is to install an OS update from a zip file instead of over the air. I no longer have a SIM card in my Nexus and need this procedure in order to update it.

ADB does not need drivers. you need just SDK tools and that includes adb.exe.

ADB does need your phone to have the correct drivers which mine does not. In order to do what I need to which is this link I will need those drivers:

Their steps:

If your computer doesn’t recognize your device, than you do not have the appropriate drivers installed. Make sure that you installed the Google USB Drivers that I mentioned earlier. If you still have an issue, follow these steps….

1) On your Windows desktop, Go to your Control Panel then Device Manager.

2) You should see Android Phone under Other Devices with a Yellow ! mark on it.

3) Right click on it and choose update driver

4) Choose browse my computer, then Let me pick from a list.

5) Select Android ADB Interface.

6) You should hopefully now be good to go.

Step 5 does not work for me -there is no ADB interface to select.
Windows 8 is plug play same with windows 7 and xp
Plug in a device and windows installs the necessary drivers.
Please read
Google USB Driver
The Google USB Driver is required for Windows only in order to perform adb debugging with any of the Google Nexus devices.
You can download the Google USB Driver for Windows in one of two ways:
Click to download the latest Google USB Driver ZIP file.
Or, use the Android SDK Manager tool that is included with the Android SDK
Using the SDK Manager helps you keep the driver up to date by notifying you when your current driver is out of date.
Launch the Android SDK Manager by double-clicking SDK Manager.exe, at the root of your SDK directory.
Expand Extras.
Check Google USB Driver package and click Install.
Proceed to install the package. When done, the driver files are downloaded into the <sdk>\extras\google\usb_driver\ directory.
For installation information, read Installing a USB Driver.

With regards to OS update the above should help you to understand your option.,>The reason I need these drivers is to install an OS update from a zip file instead of over the air.<<

Ok  - just figured out whey the driver install was not working - I went one folder too deep in with the install path:
