W7-troubles The driver \Driver\WUDFRd

Been trouvbleshooting Sister's system... much progress, a few remnants remain.  Example of ongoing issues in event log

The driver \Driver\WUDFRd failed to load for the device WpdBusEnumRoot\UMB\2&37c186b&0&STORAGE#VOLUME#_??_USBSTOR#DISK&VEN_GENERIC-&PROD_MULTI-CARD&REV_1.00#20071114173400000&0

This is a Dell Enspiron 660 with W/7 all updated, 64 bit.  Other Q open about libraries but want to focus on this; although they appear to be related.

The performance counter explain text string value in the registry is not formatted correctly. The malformed string is . The first DWORD in the Data section contains the index value to the malformed string while the second and third DWORDs in the Data section contain the last valid index values. ....  some kind of registry issues, but unclear.

and this, another open Q still awaiting response and possibly linked.  Custom dynamic link libraries are being loaded for every application. The system administrator should review the list of libraries to ensure they are related to trusted applications.

I'm attaching a couple of snapshots of issues in the hopes this helps resolve... how can a drive exist I cannot see and calls itself G?  Most baffled.

images included.

thank you so much.

One more image of the strange disk and potentially related to the error message.

what happens if you disconnect / reconnect the drive?
do you hear the notification sound?
test the drive also on another PC - it can have problems also

Thank you again.
I'll be with that system tomorrow.
Since there's only one hard drive I'm unclear about that.
Could be a USB three card that was installed some time ago.
I'll let you know when I return to the system thank you

MASQ --- how do I determine where this 8 in 1 card reader is on this inspiron?  The link above states for windows 8.1; this is version 7
the second jpg shows a removable drive - what would that be then Asta?

nobus, if I knew that we'd both we the wiser.  This is truly baffling!  There is one hard drive.  When I ran a backup using the USB3 port for a Seagate drive, it was ""E"".

Went through every item in Device Manager and checked for updated drivers; the only ones found to be needed were for WAN Miniport.  Not a wide area network, so disregarded it.  Ran the Windows 7 performance analyzer and found some hardware issues.  Here's the info on that.

what disks show up in the bios?
you will note that many errors are with the lan - maybe running SFC can help -or a repair ?

The drivers are linked to from that page - choose "Other versions" at the bottom-left

On the mini-tower the card reader is on the front  behind the flip-down panel (see below)

Thank you for this detail.  Will return to that system in the morning and respond.

I've run tons of diagnostics, including the system integrity checker at elevated prompt as follows    sfc /scannow    no issues found.

It's there, but unclear about it.  Shows nothing, is called G... lost.  Getting old too soon.

sfc /scannow .... always no problems.  Run so many times.

I hope to continue this tomorrow and cannot thank you enough for your help here.
Family systems (5) with varied issues.  This one is most persistent.
>>  sfc /scannow .... always no problems  <<  in most cases, it reports no problems ; you have to look in the cbs.log file for what it did

There is no cbs.log on this system anywhere

REMAINS as problem...  related?

Does this not sound like some kind of Registry settings that needs to be modified?
Have you put a card in the reader yet?
Would be interested to see which drive letter is allocated to it.
there should be a log file; any how here is how to find it and use it; i usually search it for "cannot" "repairing" or repaired  https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/928228?wa=wsignin1.0
did you find the card reader yet, as Masq asked?
