server 2011 essentials install problem with raid, sata drives

I am trying to install server 2011 essentials on a clean dell t110 server.  In the bios the sata is set to AHCI.  I configured the perc s300 for a 2 disk raid1.
No matter what I try when I start the installation I get stuck on "the installation cannot proceed because a primary hard drive is not detected".  I'm presuming it is means it can't find hard drive drivers.
I went to Dell support website and downloaded the dell drivers - but they are executibles so the system won't install them. The drives are Constellation ST1000NM001. (note; can't find drivers on Seagate website but can get it on Dell).
I suspect that i am missing a key step. Any advice?

I also suggest using the OpenManage DVD you got with the server to set it up and install the OS. If you still need to install it without that tool then it is the disk controller's drivers that you need, not the disk drivers. Usually the controller's drivers are available as zip files which you can extract, usually the download site tells you they are meant for during OS installation. If they aren't just run the exe file on another PC, that will extract the drivers to a temporary folder.
