Lync server

Hello,
At work I have become the "lead" Lync person. The clients are Lync 2013. I was digging around our installs and found Lync 2010 server. So I want to get the big picture and setup a Lync server and test Lync users in a Lab environment. I plan to have a Lync server on a switch that is off the network, and have a few test clients.
I have never setup a Lync server, and was guessing that I would need to setup a Windows 2008 server, then install Lync server on the windows server. Does that sound right?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Yes, you need 2008 OS. Why don't you first read articles and watch few installation videos and then install it. Below are two:

You can also test MS virtual labs for lync.

Lync deployment is based on number of user and type of user (internal and external) in your environment.

Use Lync 2013 Planning Tool   to design  your environment.
