Why "Access denied" when I try to open Excel File ?

I tried to open somefile.xls from a server.   The file didn't open.  I got Following message:

Microsoft Office Excel
                 Access denied.  Contact your administrator.

What might be the problem?  Do I not have access to the server.   Or does this have to do with whether I'm administrator on my machine or not.

Try to open a file locally on your computer and see if it opens. If so, Excel is probably OK.

does this have to do with whether I'm administrator on my machine or not.   <-- Should not.

What is "Server"?  Try:  NET USE T: \\servername\folder and authenticate, where folder is the location of the Excel file. Does this work?  And if no, What error do you get?
It means Excel lacks delete permissions on a UNC path (To delete the temporary file). Either grant full access to the directory or apply this patch if you have Excel 2010:

The Microsoft Office Excel File I'm trying to open is part of hyperlink.  I believe the server that contains the excel file is in Mexico and I'm in United States.  Both are locations of the same company.

Then you should ask the admin in Mexico to check the permissions of the network drive. It seems your user account lacks the proper permissions.

You may need a VPN connection between sites unless the Excel file is on a public server (which is not likely in my experience).

What error did the NET USE statement give you?

When I type the information as follows:

C:\Users\"username">NET USE T:\\servername\folder

System error 67 has occurred.  The network path was not found.

C:\Users\"username">NET USE \\servername\folder
System error 53 has occurred.  The network path was not found.

The error suggests you are trying to connect over the internet only and not via a secured link. You are not even finding the folder.
