Exchange Issues

Good Afternoon,

I've got an issue with an Exchange account which is a bit bizarre... (well for me anyway).

I have a client using Windows SBS 2011 with Exchange 2010

Everyone's email account is fine, except for 2 people.

Their accounts are set up in Outlook 2013, on a terminal server as they work for another company. Some days it's fine, other days it freezes saying it's connecting to Microsoft Exchange and other times it freezes saying 'No Connection'.

I've re-added the account on the terminal server, took off cached exchange mode. Changed the server time out period, etc but still no luck.

Are there any tests I can do to see what's happening and whether it's my server or the terminal server? I'm currently waiting for the other company to call me to see what their set up is.

Kind Regards,
Emily

Is the server fully patched? Exchange 2010 SP3 with all of the latest updates?
Same for the terminal server, as both Exchange and Outlook have had a lot of updates for communication with Exchange.

Hi Both,

The server our end is fully patched with all its updates. I've tried disabling add-ins, turning off the AV, creating a new profile. Even tried a brand new profile with a brand new email account and even with 5 emails in it, it still happens.

Kind regards,
Emily

Has Powershell sent you back into the Stone Age?

If managing Active Directory using Windows Powershell® is making you feel like you stepped back in time, you are not alone.  For nearly 20 years, AD admins around the world have used one tool for day-to-day AD management: Hyena. Discover why.

Does the problem follow to another workstation?
Everything you have done points to an issue with the workstation (so terminal server in this case). Very unusual for a problem to follow a new profile and account.

Just to add, how big are these users mailboxes? Have you tried to setup different user on the terminal server to see if they experience the same issues? Does the server have sufficient resources? Have you tried to move the mailboxes that are experiencing this issue to another mailbox database and test again?

Hi Simon - No it doesn't, just this terminal server which is what I think the cause of the issue is. No one else has the problem bar the users that are set up on the TS. I can take the users that are set up on the TS, set them up locally and Outlook is fine.

Hi Will - One mailbox is 0.5GB and the other is literally empty. As per the above I have set up another use on the TS and they have the same issue. I'm not sure if the TS has sufficient resources. I'm 100% sure the mailboxes are fine.

I just need to narrow down if it's my server or the TS but I'm assuming its the TS. I just want to double check as the creators of the TS are adamant it's not them. Going around in circles.

Thanks,
Emily

You had stated this never happens for anyone else other then the 2 users that use TS. When you put another user on there that NEVER used TS before they get the same issue.

This clearly points to the TS as being the issue.

I have experienced something similar in my Citrix environment with Excel hanging for users when Office was not properly Licensed. Once the version of Office was licensed properly with the serial key it worked without issue.

This might be the same case in your scenario.
