I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Look no further than alarms tab...
If you read far in vmware best practices it should alert you on 1h >80% CPU in host and in guest, and in virtual disk latency > 33.3(3)s
Host reboot is fairly normal if you have vmotion... Shutdown is logical when you have DPM enabled... Does not it suffice that those events are logged?

You need to change two settings, you need to add the SMTP mail server, and from address field, which you can find in the vSphere Client, under

Administration > vCenter Server Settings > Mail.

Once you have done, that you will then need to find the Alarm Definition Object, which is easily found if you select your vCenter Server, Alarms Tab, and then select the Alarm, and you will need to modify the Actions, and enter a Recipient email address.

We’d all like to think our company’s data is well protected, but when you ask IT professionals they admit the data probably is not as safe as it could be.

Hello prana1984

Do the following;

1. in the vCenter Home page go to vCenter Server Settings
2. Configure your SMTP Server and Sender account
3. Add the vCenter IP to your internal relay connector in your email server.
4. Go to hosts and clusters
5. select your cluster and click on Alarms tab.
6. select Definitions
7.  Right Click new Alarm
8. Under General tab. Add Alarm name (i.e. ESXi Host Status).
9. Select Alarm Type Monitor " Hosts"
10. Select Monitor for Specific events occuring on this object, for example, VM powered On.
11. Click Triggers tab and click add.
12. Select the Trigger type and add Event (i.e. A disconnected host has vSphere HA protected VMs)
If you want to select the Host power status go back to step 10 and select "Monitor for specific conditions or state, for example, CPU usage, power state.
13. Add Status type and conditions for your event.
14. Select Actions tab and add action (i.e. Send a notification email) add the email and the status.

I hope this can help you.

and you need to repeat for each alarm definition!

You also need to monitor distributed switch config failures, vmotion failures, and hosts themselves for slow IO and underprovided CPU.

Andrew Hancock (VMware vExpert / EE MVE^2)VMware and Virtualization ConsultantCommented:
There is no authentication options. You will need to use a service where no authentications is required.

you specify a mail server name and reply address.
