Change email account for a AD user

Hi all

we have one user whose email was linked to AD and was say

He also has access to another email say - within same exchange server. I created a new user with his name and then gave full permissions to user123 so he can access 2 accounts.

But now he wants user123@xyz as his main email. Whats best way to change his main email address ?

hope above makes sense lol

As at present if he creates a new email its always and not xyz.

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

In exchange Management Console, you can go into the recipient configuration and go into Addresses.

Untick the box at the bottom (which is along the lines of 'apply based on group policy'), click on the address you DO want as his main one and then at the top click Set as Reply.

That'll fix it.

When i tried changing the above to the account he uses to log in i get below error. Would i need to delete below user account first? If i do, how do i set up a forwarder so all emails from his old email goes to new account?

Microsoft Exchange Error
The following error(s) occurred while saving changes:

The proxy address "" is already being used by "xxxx". Please choose another proxy address.
Why change the login address? If you can change the main e-mail address (for sending and receiving) doesn't that help them enough?

Just a thought....

I was trying to change email address and got above error. Ideally prefer email address change. but as ive created 2 user account and him getting both emails in one outlook.

I now need him to log on as same user but take full control of the other users email address but within existing mailbox so he don't lose any emails? hope this is making sense

But as all people have his old email address i need to set up a forwarder somehow so if anyone sends email in his old address it will go to new address but existing mailbox?

sorry very hard to explain lol
The approach previously described will not work because it misses an important distinction: the two email addresses are bound to SEPARATE Active Directory user principals, each with its own mailbox, so the "primary" email address cannot simply be set on a single entity.

The easiest route with minimal up-front work would be to have the user log in with the credentials of the user account with the email address. Unfortunately, this means he will be a different person to the system (since this account has a different SID), and could be problematic in the assignment of security and permissions if this is not all handled by group membership.

Alternatively, delete the secondary mailbox, copy the mail to the main mailbox, and simply set up both addresses on the same account. Follow the previous poster's comment to make the primary; this will work because it is now not a duplicate of an address on another mailbox.
