DC Promo Error

I’m trying to promote a member server to a domain controller.   The server I’m trying to promote is running Server 2003 R2.  The current FSMO domain controller is running Server 2003 (not R2).

I'm getting the error message below and attached is a screenshot of the message:

The “The Active Directory Installation Wizard' cannot continue because the forest is not prepared for installing Windows Server 2003. Use the Adprep command-line tool to prepare both the forest and the domain. For more information about using the Adprep, see the help Active Directory.

"The version of the Active Directory schema of the source forest is not compatible with the version of Active Directory this computer."

How can I promote the member server running Server 2003 R2 to a domain controller?

Thanks,
cja

you already posted the answer

Use the Adprep command-line tool to prepare both the forest and the domain.

you need to run adprep /forestprep and adprep /domainprep on the 2003 server using 2003 R2 media in cmpnents\R2\ADPREP

I agree with Seth. With any new version of Windows for a DC, you always need to do a forest and domain prep first before you can add an additional domain controller whose OS is different from the current DC.

I ran adprep and forestprep but did not run domainprep.  The dcpromo is running now seems to be working  on the Server 2203 R2 machine.  Should I run domainprep when it is done?

Thanks,

cja

should have been done before dcpromo

DCpromo ran fine without it. What do you suggest?
