Upgrade 2008R2 to BI2012 error message

Thanks in advance for prompt answers to this question!
On a virtual server running Windows 2008R2 with SQL Server 2012 Enterprise Edition and SQL Server 2008R2 already installed, received the following error at the start of the upgrade of 2008R2 to Business Intelligence version of SQL Server 2012.  Can 2008R2 be upgraded to BI edition 2012 with 2012 Enterprise already on the machine?
FYI:  using another SQL Server 2012 Enterprise Edition installation is unavailable at this point due to cost of licensing

Since SQL does parallel installs, not upgrades, the error message has nothing to do with your previous installs.  I would say first off that if the install file isn't on the local server hard drive, move it there and try again. If it's on a CD or other external media, then copy it to one of the hard disk partitions on the 2012 server and run it from there.

However, the setup and other files are on the local drive.
  Any other thoughts?

Depends. It's a VM. Are you licensing by VM or by Physical Server? If it's by Physical Server you may install more SQL Server instances without paying more for it.
