"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

> restoring from database
This list contains only databases that have been backed up according to the msdb backup history; now if the backup is taken from a different server, the destination server will not have the backup history information for the specified database. In this case, select Device to manually specify the file or device to restore.

Just to complete Aneesh excellent comment, the restore from database only works on the local instance and you need to have the backup files in the same location the backup was written to. The SSMS won't check if the files still exist or not. It only give the information that is in the msdb database.
