VPN tunnel over a satillite link

I have a remote office that only has satellite internet.  I want to set up a VPN tunnel between two Cisco Small Business RV325 firewalls.  I got the tunnel to come up but it has painfully slow transmission.  What can be done?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Such a link will probably be slow no matter what because of the latency involved.

Try setting the MTU in the WAN (satellite) connection of the router to 1492 or a bit less on both ends. You may wish to experiment a bit to see if you can find a good setting. Lowering the MTU can change (improve) packet fragmentation.

It kind of depends on what you need to do with this connection.

Some protocols like SMB (filesharing) are very slow when used over high latency links. There are protocols that tolerate high latency much better (eg. FTP instead of SMB).

So it all depends: what are you trying to do? Which protocols do you use?
