"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

phpMyAdmin is completely separate from MySQL and you databases.  However, the standard Ubuntu installation is thru their repository and you will only get the version they are supporting.

You can install a second copy of phpMyAdmin in your web site since it is just a PHP program and it will be completely separate from the Ubuntu install and it can be any version you want.
