SQL 2008 R2 - Getting Started with Clustering and Mirroring

I'm getting started with a new SQL environment. My details are below:

Environment:

Primary and secondary site
SQL 2008 R2 Standard
Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard
No Shared Storage
Two SQL Servers total. Virtualized in two separate locations

It appears the solution based on my budget and needs one involving clustering of two SQL servers, and then mirroring my three databases.

I'm doing a fresh install of windows. VMware and VPN are already in place.

Would you point me to a good reference to get started with the process or outline the high level tasks?

SQL 2008 R2 with SP3 utilizing database mirrioring on a Windows Server 2012 R2 Cluster w/o shared storage is difficult at best. I've decided to no go with clustering or mirroring.
