VMware Vcenter backup as a Windows VM ?

Hi All,

I'm running Windows VCenter 5.1 with the builtin SQL Server database, so what is the best and simplest method to backup and recover it in case it is crashed or broken after the windows update ?

Thanks,

Yes, fantastic software product, why would you not use it to backup a VM!?

A vCenter VM is no special than any other VM, and is far simpler to restore than a Domain Controller!

I suggest you Test your Backup and Restore Procedures!

and also enact a scenario, where all your hosts have failed, and SAN, and you only have Veeam backups available ?

Have you ever tried this?

Do you test backups ? and restore them ?

If not NOW IS THE TIME!

It's far better to test your restore plan, before the dark day arrives! when you will not be calm, and under extreme pressure and stress to re-gain service!

We always encourage our clients, to practice, and document on clip boards a written procedure, not go from memory, because in the moment of Disaster Recovery, people collapse under stress.

Reading a Disaster Recovery Manual, as what to do, and follow, is easy and reduces stress, and chaos!

There is no chance restored copy of vcenter could eventually work.
You can live without vcenter long enough to roll back faulty update.

Well, if it is a physical server, you can use windows backup or Symantec System recovery for the complete restore of the server. Yet, just have a look on the following links too.

Hello? How recovering AD domain membership will restore network configuration counter on ESXis?

You can follow the backup method of moving your vCenter to another server for example, this way you can restore to a point in time:

- Backup Databases (don't forget SSO)
- Backup the SSL certificates (if applicable)
- Backup the inventory DB
- Backup SSO config

Now install (repair) your (new) Windows server and restore the database backups and install vCenter Server...

I think that covers the major steps ...

Any Backup application can Backup and Restore vCenter Server.

BUT, we always take a CLONE copy of VM Servers before we do any updates, as it's quicker to restore.
