"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Backup to dissimilar hardware will require you to call MS support to register the OS as genuine but since XP is no longer supported that may be pointless?

Michael have you used it? Will I need to preload drivers? Do I need to make a boot CD?

Have a look on this article: http://www.experts-exchange.com/Software/Backup_Restore/A_2569-Migration-to-dissimilar-hardware-How-to-migrate-to-new-hardware-without-OS-reinstallation.html
I used it personally and you need to have drivers ready to install them under WinPE through P2P Wizard.

Drivers will be needed for the new hardware.

Well, you cannot migrate OS from one hardware to another which is dissimilar to original hardware without installing the drivers. If someone tells you that you can - then he lies or he does not know what he is talking about.
You can move OS partition to different PC without drivers needed only if you are virtualizing your XP.

Acronis True Image is a great product.

However, even though it is capable of restoring to very different hardware the OS you are restoring WILL require drivers to operate the new hardware you cannot get away from that. Acronis allows you to point to directories containing drivers for the new system and it can install them during restore operation.

Good luck,
Krompton

it looks like you don't understand what an "universal restore" does :
it strips the OS from all installed drivers - so when you boot up the new hardware with it - you have to install the drivers for the new ghardware in some way
